Astragalus exscapus ssp. transsylvanicus

This subspecies has recently re-gained its recognition as a distinct taxa in a monography of the European species of the genus Astragalus L. It is a part of a large acaulescent group of species which is basilcally located in the mountainous steppes of Central Asia where it reaches its greatest level of diversity (more than 100 species).

The species Astragalus exscapus L. is present on the European list of prioritary species. The subspecies is endemic for the Transylvanian Plain, the most arid part of the Transylvanian Basin where it can still be found in some quite large populations. However all of them are nowadays under a huge anthropic pressure.
